Is DVF worth the money?
I recently bought two DVF dresses—this silk style and this one on sale (the color, honestly, is worth the whole purchase). A reader asked the exact question: “Is it really worth it?”
The short answer: it depends. DVF invented the wrap dress and remains the icon. When I wear mine, women who know always notice. The silk jersey drapes differently—it moves with you, never against you. But the price gap with brands like Ann Taylor or Karen Kane is real. If the wrap dress is your signature silhouette (it is mine), invest. Otherwise, watch the sales; you can find a piece under $200 that still feels luxurious. “Something is only worth the money if you love it, wear it, and feel extraordinary every time you put it on.”
Preppy beyond J.Crew?
Another reader writes: “I’ve settled on preppy as my signature, but I struggle to find retailers that feel Cape Cod without looking like a Fourth of July barbecue.”
It is a fine line—and most brands land on the wrong side of it. My answer: J. McLaughlin (no relation to the designer). Their linen dress and button-front polo have the right relaxed polish. Yes, they stock striped tees and shell prints, but the core collection is quietly excellent.
The other name, of course, is Ralph Lauren. Across his ready-to-wear and diffusion lines, he offers classic sportswear at every price. Macy’s, especially during sales, carries the widest selection. This summer, I am wearing his linen top with shorts—the last perfect weekend outfit before the seasons turn.
Reader Kate added: “Ann Mashburn and Alex Mill are both great for preppy without falling into Vineyard Vines territory.” I co-sign entirely. Ann Mashburn’s buckle-toe flats and cashmere are superb; Alex Mill’s sweaters pop up frequently on Poshmark. Also, don’t sleep on St. James striped tees.

A new arrival to central Montana asks for reliable state news. The landscape here is… complicated. A single national company now owns every major newspaper and is systematically bleeding them dry. My favorite cut—hands down. Multiple washes, multiple inseam lengths. And the question of shoes: what don’t I wear them with? In summer, a simple sandal or sleek sneaker. I also pair them with the flats I mentioned earlier.
Come fall, a square-toe ankle boot. As an elder millennial, I used to obsess over hem length. Lately, I’ve noticed younger women wearing cropped or ankle-length jeans with shorter boots. It does not always work—but when the boots are considered and the outfit is intentional, it becomes a quiet update on the “wrong shoe” theory.
Lightweight body lotion, please
A reader who owns more balms than she can count asks for something light. I understand: nobody wants to stand naked waiting for cream to sink in. My go-to this month is Hanni Spray-On Lotion. I keep it in my golf bag for reapplication after the wind dries my arms. Light enough to layer over sunscreen without turning into a grease ball. The vanilla scent is a quiet pleasure.

Most of my home decor is Room & Board—but rugs? Almost entirely All Modern. I understand a “nice” rug costs thousands. I walk on it, spill on it, have dogs. A $400 rug suits me just fine.
